ALL GODS MUST DIE in this searingly relevant YA dystopian from award-winning and New York Times bestselling author of The Wicked Bargain and Most Ardently. In a world bound by violence, a teen descended from the god of Death must keep their true identity a secret as they fight their way through a gladiator-style competition towards victory and rebellion against the gods who murdered their family.
Years ago, the descendants of the god of Death were murdered. The few that remain are in hiding, including Crow, a teen who survived the genocide and hides their magic to stay alive. After fleeing their village, Crow now lives with their uncles in the lowest part of the city: the Shallows.
Life in the Shallows is tough, but Crow’s even tougher. Hiding their magic has made Crow resourceful, cunning, and unbeatable — which comes in handy as a fighter in the city's lucrative underground fighting ring.
Then, Crow's uncles are arrested for harboring Deathchildren.
With fists tightly clenched, Crow vows to set their uncles free. But to do that, they’re going to need to enter a world that threatens Crow’s very existence. Carefully navigating the politics of the wealthy and powerful, they enter the Tournament of the Gods — a gladiator-style competition where the winner is granted a favor. As they battle their way towards the winner’s circle, Crow plans to ask the gods for their uncles’ freedom as their reward.
But in a city of gods and magic, you don’t ask for what you want.
You take it.

After Crow's uncles are arrested, he must fight in the Tournament of the Gods for a chance to save them from execution. Transmasculine Crow is a Deathchild, descended from the god Death and blessed with abilities ranging from manipulating shadows and sensing others' physical weaknesses to adjusting his own hormone levels. But Deathchildren are persecuted in Escal, and Crow has been surviving in secret in the poverty-stricken Shallows. When his uncles are transported to the wealthier Midlevel by Enforcers to await trial for smuggling Deathchildren to safety, Crow, with the help of his sponsor, the minor god Chaos, joins the televised Tournament, which takes place on Midlevel. If he wins, the gods will grant him a favor, and if he doesn't, at least he's nearer his uncles and can try to figure out another plan--if he can survive the Tournament without being outed as a Deathchild, that is. Though lacking the tonal clarity and originality ofThe Hunger Games, the story follows in its footsteps as a critique of artificially stratified communities that use violence as both a tool of suppression and as a source of entertainment. The emphasis on the loss of the Deathchildren's culture and the creative mythology that characterizes this world help set it apart, as does the frequent, overt inclusion of characters with diverse gender identities. Crow and Chaos are brown-skinned. A familiar story made fresh with compelling details and social commentary.(Fantasy. 14-18)

Grades 9-12 From the author of Most Ardently (2024) and The Diablo's Curse (2024) comes a dark, dystopian battle to the death. Readers are first introduced to the city of Escal through the pantheon of gods. Some citizens can draw power from these gods, though genocide has taken many in the name of them. Belief in these gods is why Escal's strict caste system has not been toppled. In what may cause a revival in the YA dystopia craze, Crow, a transmasculine nonbinary teen, throws himself into what readers will recognize as a Hunger Games-esque competition in order to free their recently arrested uncles. While Crow grew up as a challenger in the lucrative underground fighting ring of the Shallows, the publicity that comes with the Tournament of the Gods doesn't bode well for keeping his lineage--a descendant of the Death god--a secret. Novoa pulls no punches in examining identity, generational trauma, and the necessity of rebellion. With propulsive pacing and fearless social commentary, this work is a critical entry into the dystopian genre.
