Althea Gibson, the first black person to compete in U.S. Lawn Tennis Association (USLTA) tournaments, broke the racial barrier in tennis with her perseverance and fighting spirit. She won both the All-England Tennis Championship at Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals at Forest Hills, thus claiming the number one spot in women's tennis. Her determination to "be someone" took her to the pinnacle of tennis and opened the door for black participation in the game. Today, she remains an inspiration to all athletes.
