A clever and steamy queer romantic comedy about taking chances and accepting love—with all its complications—from the author of Astrid Parker Doesn't Fail.
Delilah Green swore she would never go back to Bright Falls—nothing is there for her but memories of a lonely childhood where she was little more than a burden to her cold and distant stepfamily. Her life is in New York, with her photography career finally gaining steam and her bed never empty. Sure, it’s a different woman every night, but that’s just fine with her.

When Delilah’s estranged stepsister, Astrid, pressures her into photographing her wedding with a guilt trip and a five-figure check, Delilah finds herself back in the godforsaken town that she used to call home. She plans to breeze in and out, but then she sees Claire Sutherland, one of Astrid’s stuck-up besties, and decides that maybe there’s some fun (and a little retribution) to be had in Bright Falls, after all.

Having raised her eleven-year-old daughter mostly on her own while dealing with her unreliable ex and running a bookstore, Claire Sutherland depends upon a life without surprises. And Delilah Green is an unwelcome surprise…at first. Though they’ve known each other for years, they don’t really know each other—so Claire is unsettled when Delilah figures out exactly what buttons to push. When they’re forced together during a gauntlet of wedding preparations—including a plot to save Astrid from her horrible fiancé—Claire isn’t sure she has the strength to resist Delilah’s charms. Even worse, she’s starting to think she doesn’t want to...

Blake (Girl Made of Stars) makes her adult debut with a broad queer rom-com. Stepsisters Astrid Parker and Delilah Green shared a household for a decade and resented every minute of it. Now Delilah’s an artist hustling in New York, but she comes home to Oregon when her stepmother promises to pay her $15,000 to be Astrid’s wedding photographer. Astrid still runs with her high school crew, Claire and Iris, whom Delilah thinks of as mean girls. That’s accurate, but Claire and Iris both loathe Astrid’s fiancé and they’re willing to make an unholy alliance with devil-may-care Delilah if it will rescue Astrid from the match. Meanwhile, Delilah has a not-quite-bet with Astrid that Delilah will wrangle shy Claire, her former high school crush, into bed. The resulting escapades are mostly alcohol-fueled pratfalls laced with bitterness. It’s Sex in the City with a Breakfast Club edge as four women with old grudges manipulate one another through the two-week run-up to Astrid’s wedding. The result is heavier on slapstick humor than feelings and will appeal more to chick lit fans than romance aficionados. Agent: Rebecca Podos, Rees Literary.

Kristen DiMercurio gives a spirted performance of this funny, sexy, and heartwarming queer rom-com. Photographer Delilah Green fled her hometown of Bright Falls, Oregon, as soon as she could, desperate to escape her distant stepsister, Astrid, and painful memories of her late father. When she begrudgingly returns to photograph her sister's wedding, she's not expecting to fall for Astrid's best friend, Claire--a single mom who runs the local bookstore. DiMercurio smoothly switches between Delilah and Claire's points of view. She voices Delilah in a low tone that is by turns growly and smooth, and portrays Claire in a brighter, higher register that is tinged at times with exhaustion or humor. She's equally good at portraying the two women's families and friends, adding to this audiobook's homey feel. L.S. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine

Blake's debut, the start of an expected queer romance series, weaves together stories of women facing down painful memories while making tentative steps toward romance. Delilah Green has tried to convince herself that she doesn't care about her sad childhood or her uptight stepsister Astrid or her boring hometown. But when Astrid insists that Delilah return to Bright Falls to photograph her high-society wedding, her carefully constructed shell of nonchalance breaks down. An unexpected romance with former supposed mean girl Claire forces Delilah to reconsider everything she thought she knew about her own past and future. Narrator Kirsten DiMercurio brings these quirky characters to life with the perfect mix of sarcasm and sweetness. She creates distinct voices for the core cast of very different women and keeps the snappy dialogue flowing. As the plot grows more complicated and fevered, DiMercurio's steady pacing won't let listeners down. VERDICT Perfect for fans of Jasmine Guillory and Casey McQuiston or those wanting the drama of a Hallmark movie with steamier romance.--Natalie Marshall
